Established in 1998 the Lockerley herd now numbers 45 pedigree Aberdeen-Angus cows which run alongside a herd of 80 commercial cows which are crossbred with Charolais and Simmental bulls, with heifers retained as replacements.
The herd was formed initially with 10 cows from the Nightingale herd along with the entire Burningfold herd of 60 cows along with select additions from the Netherton, Halbeath and Coal Yeat herds.
A significant influence on the herd in recent years has been the herd sire Rawburn Jester Eric J034 with this sire subsequently going on to be interbreed champion at the Royal Highland Show in 2014, while historic influences include the leading stock bull from the Burningfold herd, Haymount Wavalo.
Today the aim of the herd is to produce bulls suited to the commercial market, with most bulls sold from home and only select animals put forward to Society sales.
In recent years a number of surplus females have been sold in to the burgeoning European export market, while success at sales has included topping Perth twice as well as taking the overall championship at Perth once and the intermediate championship twice.
Meanwhile, show success has included taking the junior male championship at the Royal Show for three years running as well as the junior championship at the Royal Highland Show.
